About Bellevue, KY

Situated in the northernmost part of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, Bellevue stands as a distinguished home rule city, renowned for its scenic location on the Ohio River's banks, directly across from Cincinnati, Ohio, within the bounds of Campbell County. Officially incorporated on March 15, 1870, Bellevue boasts a rich history and a population of approximately 5,955 according to the 2010 census. This charming city is neighbored by Newport to the west, Dayton to the east, and touches Fort Thomas at its southern border. Bellevue is celebrated for its historic charm and an array of unique architectural treasures, alongside plentiful amenities that make it an attractive location for individuals, families, and businesses looking to relocate.

The land that Bellevue occupies was originally awarded to General James Taylor, a notable general in the War of 1812, as well as a pioneer, banker, and statesman, who relocated here with a group of settlers from Virginia. His historical mansion is still standing on East Third Street in Newport. Interestingly, the name "Bellevue," meaning "beautiful view" in French, does not reference the city's stunning views of the Cincinnati skyline but rather, it is a homage to General Taylor's Virginia family plantation. The general is credited with naming many of Bellevue's streets, embedding his own history and that of American heritage throughout the city.

By the late 19th century, Bellevue was a bustling community, home to Balke’s Opera House which doubled as the city hall and firehouse, alongside a variety of local businesses and services that catered to the residents' needs. Fairfield Avenue emerged as the commercial heart of the city, a role it continues to play today, solidifying Bellevue’s status as a thriving hub. Despite facing economic challenges in the 1980s, the city has since revitalized through historical preservation and economic development, attracting over $7 million in investments and creating upwards of 200 jobs. Today, Bellevue remains a gateway to historic charm and vibrant community life, proudly maintaining its heritage while welcoming new growth and prosperity.

Bellevue, classified as a home rule city within Campbell County, Kentucky, United States, sits gracefully on the southern shores of the Ohio River. According to the 2020 census, it boasts a population of 5,548, showcasing its small yet vibrant community.
