Discover Alexandria, KY

"Where the City Meets the Country" is our city motto. Alexandria, Kentucky is nestled in the heart of Campbell County just 14 miles south of Cincinnati. In Campbell County, Kentucky, Alexandria stands as a charming township boasting a lively blend of attractions and activities. Here, visitors and residents alike can immerse themselves in the beauty of nature by exploring an array of trails perfect for biking, jogging, or leisurely walks.

Close to the heart of Alexandria, Big Bone Lick State Park offers breathtaking vistas, inviting everyone to connect with the great outdoors. The township is also home to a vibrant array of shops and restaurants, where you can find everything from unique local finds to sumptuous meals, catering to diverse tastes and preferences. Alexandria serves as a gateway to the Southwest Ohio region, resting along the scenic Ohio River, near the borders of Kentucky and Indiana, making it a picturesque and inviting location for all who visit.

The origins of Alexandria trace back to around 1793 when Frank Spilman and his family, hailing from King George County, Virginia, settled in the area. It's speculated that the town was named after Alexandria, Virginia, by its founders. The Spilman family played a pivotal role in the town's development, initiating the sale of plots by 1819, the same year Alexandria welcomed its first post office. Official recognition came on February 22, 1834, when a state assembly act formally established Alexandria.

A significant turn of events occurred in 1840, with the Kentucky General Assembly's formation of Kenton County from parts of Campbell County, leading to the relocation of the county seat from Newport to Alexandria, better suiting the county's redrawn geographical center. Despite the relocation, resistance from residents ensued due to the majority living in Newport, necessitating legal intervention and law enforcement to facilitate the county clerk's move. Alexandria was officially incorporated in 1856.

The city's dynamic changed in 1883 when Newport established its own Court House District, retaining certain county offices and tax authority, despite a new courthouse in Newport in 1884 and the continuation of some administrative functions in Alexandria, an arrangement that persisted without formal dual recognition until 2010.

Alexandria is designated as a home rule-class city within Campbell County, Kentucky, USA. It shares the status of being one of the two county seats alongside Newport. According to the 2020 census, the city's population stood at 10,341.
